What is Antimicrobial Powder Coating?
Antimicrobial powder coating is a special type of coating that helps prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, mould, and other microbes on surfaces. This coating is perfect for places that need to stay clean and hygienic, like hospitals, schools, kitchens, and public transportation.
Introducing Thermashield
Thermashield is our special range of antimicrobial powder coatings which is specially designed to provide an extra layer of protection to various surfaces by incorporating SteriTouch antimicrobial technology. ThermaShield is a product range which can be used in a wide range of everyday applications including hygiene-critical environments and areas of high human traffic. SteriTouch prevents the growth of bacteria, biofilm, mould and other viruses by up to 99.99% for the lifetime of the product. It works continuously and effectively and is already used by a huge range of industries worldwide.
How Do Antimicrobial Coatings Work?
Antimicrobial powder coatings contain additives in the form of silver ions that stop microbes from growing. When microbes come into contact with the coated surface, silver ions embedded in the material substrate are released via ambient moisture and enter the cell membrane. The silver ions destabilise the cell, stop respiration and inhibit cell division, whilst blocking the replication of DNA, killing the cell.
Benefits of Antimicrobial Powder Coatings
There are several advantages to using antimicrobial powder coatings, making them popular in various industries. Here are some key benefits:
Enhanced Durability
Our antimicrobial powder coatings are not only protective against microbes but also durable against scratches, chips, and other forms of wear and tear. This means your surfaces will look better and last longer.
Aesthetic Versatility
Beyond its antimicrobial properties, Thermashield enhances the visual appeal of surfaces. Available in a wide range of colours and finishes, it allows for customization while maintaining its protective qualities. This makes it an ideal choice for both functional and aesthetically pleasing environments.
Improved Hygiene
Thermashield coatings offer unparalleled hygiene by actively inhibiting the growth of bacteria, mould, and fungi on surfaces. This proactive approach ensures that environments, especially those in healthcare and food processing, remain clean and safe for employees and customers alike.
Safe and Approved
All of the active substances used are approved by the EPA, EFSA and FDA, and are supported for authorisation under the Biocidal Products Regulation. We do not use Nano-silver, triclosan or other organic antimicrobial additives which have health or environmental concerns. The additives we use are non-leaching and non-sensitising.

Properties of Powders
Antimicrobial Powder Coatings
For maximum adhesion the substrate must be thoroughly cleaned of grease, rust etc. by shot blasting, solvent or chemical degreasing. For maximum protection it is essential to pretreat the substrate prior to the application of Thermaset Limited ThermaShield Anti-microbial Polyester Powder Coating.
Aluminium
Aluminium components should receive a full multi-stage chromate conversion coating or similar chrome-free pretreatment to clean and prepare the substrate. Detailed advice should be sought from the pretreatment supplier.
Galvanized steel
Galvanized steel requires multi-stage pretreatment with either zinc phosphate or chromate conversion.
Depending on the type of galvanizing, degassing or use of anti-bubbling additives may be required. Detailed advice should be sought from the pretreatment supplier.
Ferrous substrates
Ferrous substrates require iron or zinc phosphate pretreatment. Detailed advice should be sought from the pretreatment supplier.
Thermaset Limited ThermaShield Anti-microbial Polyester Powder Coatings can be applied by manual or automatic electrostatic spray equipment, an even dry film thickness of 60-70 microns is recommended. Only one batch and one spray run should be used for components that will be visible simultaneously after assembly.
Generally good resistance to acids, alkalis and oil at normal temperatures.
After 12 months exposure, minimal loss of gloss or colour change. No film breakdown or loss of protection.
