WHY USE POWDER COATING

Main reasons for use of Powder Coatings
GENERAL BENEFITS OF POWDER COATING USE

Thermo setting powder coatings are now generally recognised as having a significant role in the metal finishing industries world-wide and have been a commercial reality now for over thirty years. Powder coatings are used for the same key reasons as any surface finishing process:

  • To protect the substrate they have been applied to.
  • To enhance the appearance of the item they have been applied to.

Powder coatings are often used as alternatives to liquid paint finishing. In comparisons with traditional liquid finishing, powder coatings offer two significant application benefits:

  • They are single coat finishes, with no primer required.
  • High film thickness can be achieved with a single coat.
ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF POWDER COATING USE

The economic benefits of powder coated products are diverse. Powder coatings will assure the most durable, attractive and high-quality finish available. The key benefits of powder coatings are:

  • High Quality Finish - more durable than liquid paints, more resistant to impact, chemicals, UV light, moisture and other extreme weather conditions. Powder Coating significantly reduces the risk of corrosion, chipping, scratches and other wear and tear issues.
  • Elimination of VOC's and the reduction of waste decreases production costs.
  • Up to 99% of powder overspray can be recovered and reused. The 1% residual can easily be disposed off as a solid.
  • Ease of Use - No solvents or catalysts are required in mixing, cleaning or maintenance.

The powder coating application process is also readily automated, enabling high volume industrial application plants to operate economically with a minimum of rejects.
These benefits have enabled powder coatings to take a significant share of the industrial finishing market.

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

By using Powder Coatings you can help:

  • Reduce Air Pollution (powders emits near zero Volatile Organic Compounds).
  • Protect Environment (the waste is minimal and not hazardous and can be disposed in the landfill).

Powder Coating is:

  • A clean process.
  • 99% recoverable (over sprayed powder can be reused).
  • Helping to reduce waste.
SAFETY REASONS
  • Powder Coating reduces the health hazard to operators. As powders do not contain solvent (that are often found in wet paint) it noticeably reduces nose, mouth and throat irritation.

  • Easy washable - the powder can be removed from the skin easily by washing with warm water.

  • TGIC free products - Thermaset Powder Coatings are Lead and Chromium II free.

  • Reduced fire risk (no solvents).

KEVIN MCCONNELL SALES MANAGER   MIDLAND PAINT & POWDER COATERS LIMITED
